First 50 metre pool opens in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s first 50m swimming pool opened to the public earlier this week in Magherafelt, County Londonderry.

The multimillion pound refurbished Greenvale Leisure Centre facility is located within the heart of the Magherafelt community and will provide an extensive mix of health, fitness and leisure activities.

Work took two and a half years to complete and in addition to the new 6 lane main pool which replaced the original 25m five lane pool, other wet leisure facilities include a new teaching pool, a new children’s paddling pool and an indoor water slide with splash pool.

And while it hasn’t come cheaply - costing rate payers a reported £9m - Laurence Hastings from Magherafelt District Council said the decision to build a 50m pool was a cost-saving measure.

"The facility here developed as a result of the need," he said.

"Our existing facility was almost 40 years old. It was done and it was our opportunity to refurbish and renew that facility.

"We saw that a 50m pool was actually cheaper.

"It was cheaper to do a 50m pool than two 25m pools and that’s really why it has evolved."

Mr Hastings said he had been “overwhelmed” by the positive feedback from people who had visited the new centre.

The centre is council-owned but is run by a private company – Pulse Fitness.

Robert Buckley, Leisure Centre Manager said: "There have been nearly 3,000 families who have registered in the last two months and over 900 kids have registered for the swimming lessons programme which we are starting next week, so there’s been a huge demand for it."

A second 50m Olympic-sized pool for Northern Ireland is currently being built in Bangor.
