Freedom From Lockdown For Penlan Pool
Freedom Leisure is a not-for-profit trust which manages leisure centres on behalf of local councils. One of these is Penlan Community Leisure Centre, where the 25m, eight lane pool underwent a recent major refurbishment. Like all public swimming pools, Penlan has been closed for around four months but now the lockdown is almost over, the team is looking forward to offering relaxing swimming, training sessions and lessons for all ages and abilities and even aqua aerobics classes.

The refurbishment included an upgrade of the water treatment system, and this aspect of the works was entrusted to Sterling Hydrotech who, like many swimming pool water treatment contractors, have a long-standing relationship with equipment supplier Evoqua. As part of the refurbishment, Freedom Leisure was looking to reduce water, energy and chemical usage on site and consider greener alternatives to the traditional method of sand filtration. There was also an access problem to the existing plant room.

After discussions with Evoqua, Sterling selected Evoqua’s Defender® filter as providing not only the best space saving solution, using just a single vessel, but also superior filtration. It uses perlite, a harmless volcanic magma, to capture particles as small as one micron, eliminating the need for flocculant dosing. The cleaning process takes about ten minutes and generates significantly less wastewater than a conventional sand filter backwash. Consequently, a backwash water tank is not required for the filter, so the balance tank can be much smaller. The low wastewater volume also means that less heated water is wasted, improving the overall energy efficiency.

Disinfection is provided by an Evoqua chemical-free Wafer® UV system. This is the most compact UV disinfection system available – about one third of the size of comparative units – making it easy to install and retrofit in the most restricted of plant rooms.

The UV uses the latest in medium pressure lamp technology with UV intensity monitoring, over temperature control and automatic cleaning. The Twistlok™ UV lamp connection features a plug-and-play mechanical interlock and improved quartz seal compression for high reliability and safer and faster maintenance. Together with the Defender® filter, this provides a double barrier to chlorine resistant organisms like Cryptosporidium.

“Since its installation in the summer of 2019, the plant room is a much better place to operate in and reliability of the plant has improved massively”, said Dave Lanham, Area Technical Manager at Freedom. “Our online metering system has shown a drop in energy usage and water bills.” And, of course Dave is delighted to be welcoming swimmers back to his pool.
