Many Public Pools Are Open, But Is It Safe To Swim?
Many public swimming pools have now reopened – in a move that surprised many people, pools were one of the last public places to open after shopping centres and pubs. Some members of the public may have concerns about the safety of swimming in a public pool, however, a pool presents less of a risk of coronavirus infection than the majority of shops and restaurants; comprehensive guidance from Swim England and PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) requires that there is a high standard of cleaning and sanitising of the entire premises, maximum fresh air ventilation, admission numbers are strictly controlled, and water treatment plants constantly circulating and treating the pool water.

IAKS, the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities, through its’ Expert Circle on pools, issued a paper titled “The COVID-19 pandemic, General observations regarding public swimming pools” – this document will assist pool operators with the support and guidance it needs to keep the public safe.

The IAKS Expert Circle for swimming pools was established in November 2017 and has 21 experts including architects, engineers, operators, academics, and suppliers. Representing countries from around the globe including Canada, Australia, and 11 European, the Circle presents a truly international perspective. Devin Consulting‘s Managing Director, Tom Devin, is one of the two UK representatives.

The Expert Circle was due to meet at the IAKS conference in Norway this month but unfortunately, this has been cancelled. They will continue their good works virtually until the conference has been rescheduled.
