Flowers And Hot Tubs As Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary
St Michaels Church of Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield, recently hosted a Festival of Flowers and a very special Sunday morning service as a part of their patronal festival. The theme of the Festival of Flowers was ‘A Host of Angels’ and took place in order to commemorate their 50th anniversary since the rededication of the church in 1967 after it was rebuilt due to a fire three years before.

One of the Festival of Flowers main sponsors was local hot tub manufacturer and spa hire company, Sutton Spas. Based in Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham, the company provides the only UK manufactured, fully portable spas for hire and purchase around the country. The usual Sunday service took place, but with a very special twist – a number of people were baptised in the hot tub itself!

Karl Rowntree, the Technical Director of Sutton Spas explained how the unique situation came about following a conversation with the church’s Vicar, Reverend Gary Birchall: “Gary approached us with this wonderful, out-there idea and there was no hesitation that I wanted to help out St Michaels church.” Karl continued: “Gary has done a lot for me personally. We have been involved with the local community in many ways. I wanted to repay Gary and couldn’t think of a more unique way to help him.”

The weekend itself was very busy, with over 200 people attending – there was never a quiet moment. People were baffled as to how the baptism would take place in a hot tub, however the day was very organised and ran without a splash! The hot tub also symbolised a story from the bible, adding to the “happy” and “celebratory” event.

The Reverend helping to carry out the baptisms explained: “I am possibly the only curate to have shared a hot tub with the bishop!

"There had been nothing like this unique service before, which was open to the public and bought the community together.”
