A Good Start. A Poor Finish. Just Like The Weather
While the success of the wet leisure industry is often linked to the weather, for the second year running BSPF’s State of the Wet Leisure Industry Survey has highlighted the impact of Brexit and the economic and political uncertainty that goes with that process.
According to results revealed by survey partner Golden Coast at SPATEX, consumer confidence continues to be stifled.
Managing Director Jamie Adams said: “This, coupled with the exchange rate driven price rises distributors had to contend with at the start of 2017 wouldn’t have helped… but not one respondent actually mentioned this having an effect.
"Another price-related issue raised by respondents is the perennial problem of customers being able to comparison shop online – eroding margins. This is a serious issue and is probably more detrimental to the industry’s financial health than the danger of ‘cheap imports’. And then there’s the issue of the internet’s enthusiasm for immediate and free delivery. This puts pressure on distributor’s stock availability as well as delivery costs."
The survey, which is sent to all members of the BSPF, was launched in 2011 to provide wet leisure businesses with the intelligence they need to plan ahead more effectively.
The survey also highlighted several opportunities for growth in 2018:

- Refurbishment, particularly of existing pools, continues to grow and grow
- Travel and tourism continue to boost sales while exposing new potential customers to pools, spas and saunas
- Energy efficiency is growing in importance
