Lonza acquisition of Arch brand completed
Lonza acquisition of Arch brand completed
Arch Chemicals, the parent company of Arch Water, a brand known in the swimming pool industry for water quality and testing products, has been formally acquired by the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Lonza Group Ltd based in Basel.

The combination of both operations has created the world's largest microbial control business – to be known as Lonza Microbial Control.

The new business says that customers will benefit from innovative microbial control formulations based on a portfolio of registered and approved active ingredients. There are unlikely to be any immediate changes with the Arch Water brand products.

Arch Chemicals is a global biocides company with interests in personal care products, wood protection as well as water products. It has 3,000 employees and manufacturing and customer-support facilities in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.

The Lonza Group acquired Arch Chemicals in a cash tender offer to shareholders.

Arch Water is a world leader in water disinfection through its water products business. It specialises in commercial, residential swimming pools and industrial products to keeping water clean and safe.

In the UK its chemicals and equipment products are sold primarily under the HTH®, Fi-Clor® and Easiflo® brand names.

The acquisition of Arch, which has a strong presence in emerging markets such as Brazil, China, South Africa and India in addition to developed nations, gives Lonza Microbial Control a greatly expanded global footprint.

Arch customers and suppliers have been told they should continue to conduct business as usual through their existing contacts and channels.
Lonza Group, one of the world’s leading suppliers to the life science industries, completed the acquisition without a vote or meeting of Arch Chemicals' shareholders. The tender offer for Arch Chemical shares ended with 95.9% of the Arch stock accepting the offer of US$47.20 per share.

Lonza Microbial Control, led by Jeanne Thoma will provide customers with a complete solutions offer for their microbial control needs. The new business will be positioned to increase research and development into new products and developing technology and product development spending across its broader product portfolio. Lonza will also offer its complementary range of products and actives to a broader range of customers in both established and emerging markets.

Stefan Borgas, Chief Executive of Lonza, said: "After having built the world's leading pharmaceutical contract manufacturer over the past years, we as of today, also are the world’s leading microbial control business."

Lonza’s products and services span from research to final product manufacture. It is the global leader in the production and support of active pharmaceutical ingredients both chemically as well as biotechnologically.
